Schiff and Pelosi Complain Trump Didn't 'Consult Them' Before Strike on Soleimani
House Intelligence Committee Chairman and House Speaker blast Trump
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi blasted President Donald Trump following the U.S. airstrike at Baghdad’s international airport, which killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani.
According to the Department of Defense, Soliemani was “responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American and coalition service members and the wounding of thousands more."
Pelosi said in a statement following the strike on Thursday:
“Tonight’s airstrike risks provoking further dangerous escalation of violence."
“America — and the world — cannot afford to have tensions escalate to the point of no return.”
Pelosi also complained that Trump killed the terrorist “without the consultation of the Congress.”
“The full Congress must be immediately briefed on this serious situation and on the next steps under consideration by the Administration, including the significant escalation of the deployment of additional troops to the region,” she said.
Although Schiff said in a tweet that Soleimani “was responsible for unthinkable violence and the world is better off without him,” he still complained that the attack was not authorized by Congress.
“All steps must now be taken to protect our forces against the almost inevitable and increased risk,” he tweeted.
The deputy commander of Iran-backed militias, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, was also killed in the strike, along with five others, Iraqi officials confirmed.

But Congress didn’t authorize and American people don’t want a war with Iran.

The US' act of international terrorism, targeting & assassinating General Soleimani—THE most effective force fighting Daesh (ISIS), Al Nusrah, Al Qaeda et al—is extremely dangerous & a foolish escalation.— Javad Zarif (@JZarif) January 3, 2020
The US bears responsibility for all consequences of its rogue adventurism.
Iran’s foreign minister, Javad Zarif, tweeted in response to the attack:
"The US’ act of international terrorism, targeting & assassinating General Soleimani — THE most effective force fighting Daesh (ISIS), Al Nusrah, Al Qaeda et al–is extremely dangerous & a foolish escalation.”
“The US bears responsibility for all consequences of its rogue adventurism,” he added.
The Pentagon confirmed in a statement on Friday the attack was ordered by Trump:
“At the direction of the President, the U.S. military has taken decisive defensive action to protect U.S. personnel abroad by killing Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force, a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization."
The Pentagon added that Soleimani was “actively developing plans” to attack American service members and diplomats in Iraq.
A PMF spokesman said the drone strikes were from American and Israeli forces.
"The American and Israeli enemy is responsible for killing the mujahideen Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and Qassem Soleimani,” said Ahmed al-Assadi, a spokesman for PMF, according to Reuters.
