Joe Biden Vows to Eliminate 'Hundreds of Thousands' of American Blue Collar Jobs
2020 Democrat says he's willing to sacrifice jobs in oil and gas for a 'greener economy'
During Thursday night's Democrat Debate, 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden vowed to eliminate "hundreds of thousands" of American blue-collar jobs.
Former Vice President Biden pledged to sacrifice jobs in the oil and gas industries in order to transition to a “greener economy.”
Biden made the remarks while responding to questions about the economy during the Democratic presidential debate on CNN which was co-moderated by PBS and Politico.
“Vice President Biden, I’d like to ask you; three consecutive American presidents have enjoyed stints of explosive economic growth due to oil and gas production,” moderator Tim Alberta said.
“As president would you be willing to sacrifice some of that growth, even knowing potentially that it could displace thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of blue-collar workers in the interest transitioning to that greener economy?”
“The answer is yes,” Biden declared in response, even after the moderator noted that the move could cost hundreds of thousands of jobs.
“The answer is yes, because the opportunity, the opportunity for those workers to transition to high paying jobs, as Tom [Steyer] said, is real," Biden continued.
"We’re the only country that’s taken great crises and turned them into enormous opportunities.”
The question came as the debate about the climate continues to heat up.
Many of the 2020 Democratic candidates are now proposing plans to help the environment.
“We have enormous opportunities,” Biden continued as he discussed sacrificing American jobs.
“There are so many things we can do.
"We have to make sure we explain it to those people who are displaced – that their skills are going to be needed for the new opportunities.”
Aside from installing electric car charging stations on highways, Biden did not elaborate on any other specific "opportunities" these displaced American workers would have available to them.
Elsewhere during the debate, Biden appeared to imitate a stuttering child, drawing mixed responses online.
Biden said he gives out his “private phone number" to a list of people so "they keep in touch with me.”
The former vice president then impersonated a “little kid” with a stutter that he says calls him up.
Comedian Norm Macdonald tweeted: “Did Biden just make fun of a stuttering kid? Or did he just stutter himself?”

Entertainer Natasha Rothwell tweeted: “Did Biden just imitate a differently abled person asking for help? Unrelated, is Trump Biden’s tether?”
