Chris Cillizza weighs on the risks for Democrats with impeachment

CNN's political pundit Chris Cillizza admitted that impeaching President Donald Trump could backfire on the Democrats.

Cillizza wrote Wednesday:

"Remember this: Pelosi did not want to go down the impeachment path."

"She stood athwart her party over the summer as more and more of her Democratic members announced their support for an impeachment inquiry over Trump's conduct in connection to special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election."

Before Trumps' call the Ukrainian president, Nancy Pelosi initially pushed back on Trump's impeachment before radical democratic socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez mounted pressure on to continue efforts.

Public support for impeachment has dropped from 52% to 46%.

Meanwhile, Trump's job approval rating has gone from 39% to 45%.

According to CNN:

“Support for impeaching Trump and removing him from office stands at 45% in the new poll, down from 50% in a poll conducted in mid-November just after the conclusion of the House Intelligence Committee’s public hearings."

“Opposition to impeachment and removal stands at 47% in the new poll, up from 43% in November.”

But Democrats even vowed to continue their impeachment efforts even if the Senate votes against it.

If the Senate clears Trump early next year as expected, the House is planning to continue its push to impeach and remove the president.

Pelosi's hand has been forced, which has steered Democrats into dangerous political territory, according to Cillizza.

Democratic attorneys revealed that anti-Trump Democrats plan to continue impeachment investigations based on "evidence" from the Mueller probe that was completed earlier this year.

The House lawyers claim that such evidence may "become relevant" after the likely Senate trial.

Pelosi's hand has been forced, which has steered Democrats into dangerous political territory, according to Cillizza.

"But simply because Pelosi acquiesced to that inexorable momentum does not mean that her concerns about the politics of impeachment had changed," he said.

"What Pelosi knew then — and knows now — is that impeachment is a chaos-creator in the American electorate.

There is simply no certainty about how the voters — particularly the small number of independent and/or undecided voters — will react to all of this."
