Parents Lose Custody of Child for Refusing to Approve Sex Change Treatment
Finnish couple refuses to let daughter undergo hormone therapy to 'correct her gender'
A Finnish couple has lost custody of their daughter after they refused to approve life-altering sex-change treatment for the 15-year-old child, according to reports.
The parents refused to allow their daughter to undergo hormone therapy to “correct her gender.”
The teenage girl told her parents that she thought she was in the "wrong body" and demanded hormone therapy.
The parents say the young girl started making the transgender claims two years ago when the family had relocated from Finland to another country in the European Union.
“She was only fifteen years old, we couldn’t agree that she started using hormones,” the mother told Finnish broadcaster Yle.
The teen became angry and contacted the authorities after the parents refused to bow to their daughter’s demands.
Just a few weeks later, one of the girl's friends contacted the police and filed a criminal report against the mother and the father.
Shortly after, the government took the young girl from the parents' custody.
“From having dressed very provocatively and feminine just a few months before, she had now started to use more masculine clothes just like the others in her new gang of friends,” the mother said.
“She said she wanted to start hormone therapy right away and later remove her breasts,” she continued.
“Obviously, it felt bad that one’s own daughter was doing this, but the worst thing was that the authorities agreed,” the father told Yle.
"We were naive and thought that the doctors and the authorities would see sense. It was a big mistake."
The teenager, who now identifies as a transgender male, rarely speaks their family anymore, the parents say.
The parents were shown a video clip of their child after she had undergone six months of hormone therapy.
“Without over-dramatizing, you can say that when the voice, appearance, and personality change, it is as if they had killed our child,” the father said.
The number of children being diagnosed as transgender and being referred to undergo gender reassignment treatment has exploded in recent years.
In the UK, referrals to the taxpayer-funded NHS transgender clinic have risen from 94 in 2010 to 2,519 by last year, with the youngest patient being just three-years-old.
In Finland, the transgender clinic at Tampere University Hospital reports that the number of cases involving young people has quadrupled in the past six years.
As Neon Nettle reported earlier this year, a Scottish couple, known as Britain's first two-generational transgender family, announced that their five-year-old son is undergoing sex-change treatment to "transition" into a girl.
Jody and Greg Rogers from Glasgow said they both suffered abuse online and in their hometown following the announcement.
The trans couple, who have both switched genders themselves, said they were "shunned" by the community after they revealed that their son was to undergo a sex change.
