Boris Johnson Scores Historic Victory in UK Election, Trump Vows 'Massive Trade Deal'
Conservative Party wins on a landslide, humiliating opposition parties
Boris Johnson and his Conservative Party have soared to a historic landslide victory in the 2019 UK General Election.
As the results poured in over the last few hours, signaling a humiliating defeat for socialist Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party, US President Donald Trump congratulated populist Johnson on his win, vowing a "massive new trade deal after Brexit."
Speaking as his party romped to victory, PM Johnson hailed his "powerful new mandate to get Brexit done."
Corbyn's crushing defeat prompted him to announce he will not lead Labour into another election after his party suffered embarrassing losses.
Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson also lost her seat to the Scottish National Party, who was set for a good night in Scotland.
Johnson was the big winner, however, as the Tories won seat after seat in Labour's heartlands, prompting Corbyn to admit it had been a "very disappointing" night.
But facing his second General Election defeat, Mr. Corbyn said that he would call it a day as party leader as he was re-elected in his London seat.
He said he would discuss with the party how to ensure there was a "process of reflection."
"I will lead the party during this period to ensure this discussion takes place," he said.
The mood at Mr. Johnson's count was much more upbeat as he declared: "It does look as though this One Nation Conservative government has been given a powerful new mandate to get Brexit done."
He added: "Above all, I want to thank the people of this country for turning out to vote in a December election that we didn't want to call but which I think has turned out to be a historic election that gives us now, in this new government, the chance to respect the democratic will of the British people to change this country for the better and to unleash the potential of the entire people of this country.
"And that is what we will now do, and if we are lucky enough to be returned, as the exit polls seem to suggest, then that work will begin tomorrow... or as I should say, not tomorrow, today!"
As the results signaled a landslide election success for Johnson, President Trump congratulated the British prime minister on a "great WIN" while promising to strike a "massive new Trade Deal" between the US and UK.
The US President weighed in on Twitter in the early hours of Friday morning, congratulating Johnson on his victory.
"Congratulations to Boris Johnson on his great WIN! Britain and the United States will now be free to strike a massive new Trade Deal after BREXIT," Trump wrote.
"This deal has the potential to be far bigger and more lucrative than any deal that could be made with the E.U. Celebrate Boris!"

Johnson campaigned hard on a pledge to "get Brexit done," promising to finally steer the UK out of the European Union more than three years after Brits first voted to leave in a referendum.
Boris has secured the largest majority enjoyed by the Conservative Party since Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s.
Corbyn, meanwhile, has yet to give a clear timeframe for his departure.
