A new Economist/YouGov poll shows most Republicans prefer Trump over Lincoln

Most Republicans believe President Donald Trump is a better commander in chief than former President Abraham Lincoln, a new poll has revealed.

According to a survey published this week by the Economist/YouGov, 53 percent of respondents, who identify as Republicans, chose Trump as the superior president over Lincoln.

President Lincoln, who was credited with abolishing slavery and steered the country through the Civil War era, has always been considered one of America's greatest leaders.

The favorability of Trump among Republicans marks a stark contrast to respondents who identified themselves as Democrats, however.

94 percent of Democratic respondents chose Lincoln as the greater commander in chief over Trump.

Among all Americans, Lincoln beat Trump with a majority vote of 75 percent, reigning supreme once again.

According to Fox News, Lincoln was also tops among men, women and all other categories – except Republicans.

There were other mixed results for Trump in a comparison against Ronald Reagan, according to the Washington Times.

In one section of the poll, Republicans were asked to rank Republican presidents on a scale of 1 to 8, with 1 being “best” and 8 being “worst.”

Trump was considered the best by 32 percent of Republican respondents, followed by Lincoln (29 percent) and Reagan (27 percent).

But when asked directly whether Trump or Reagan was the better president, 41 percent of Republican respondents said Trump while 59 percent said Reagan.

This isn't the first time Donald Trump has been compared to Abraham Lincoln, however.

In May, legendary actor Jon Voight posted a two-part video on Twitter with a patriotic message to his "fellow Americans," which was an instant hit with his supporters.

Academy Award-winning conservative actor Jon Voight says President Trump is the greatest president since Lincoln

During the short videos, the veteran star declares that Donald Trump is "the greatest president since Abraham Lincoln," much to the delight of his supporters.

The "Midnight Cowboy" actor, one of the few outspoken conservatives in Hollywood, directly addressed the "people of the Republican Party."

"I know that you'll agree with me when I say that our president has our utmost respect and our love," Voight begins.

"This job is not easy for he's battling the left and their absurd words of destruction. ...

"Our nation has been built on the solid ground from our forefathers and there is a moral code of duty that has been passed on from President Lincoln."

The Academy Award-winning actor told his followers that he wanted to "acknowledge the truth" that "our country is stronger, safer, and with more jobs" because President Trump "has made every move correct."

"Don't be fooled by the political left because we are the people of this nation that is witnessing triumph," Voight continued.

"So let us stand with our president, let us stand for this truth that President Trump is the greatest president since Abraham Lincoln. God bless America."
