The leader of Sweden's populist Swedish Democrats party has called for a U-turn on his country's immigration policies, arguing that "Sweden is full" and declaring that "migrants need to go home."

Jimmie Åkesson of the conservative nationalist Sweden Democrats Party is calling for immediate action to "repair any damage" caused by mass immigration.

“In order to be able to repair any damage that has already been done it is a necessity that asylum and family reunification immigration come down to an absolute minimum,” Åkesson said at his party’s conference.

“Simply put: There must be more immigrants returning home than new immigrants arriving,” Åkesson continued.

"We must send out the signal that Sweden is full and will be so for the foreseeable future. It is a basic premise.

"If we fail to do so, the problems will only continue to grow, and the consequences will be even worse."

"And we must at the same time dare to make demands again,” Åkesson continued.

"Requirements for self-sufficiency. … … but if you live in Sweden you must adapt.

"You must adapt to our country’s values, respect our standards, learn the language, learn about how our society works.

"You must understand that you have come to a new country … … and therefore you cannot expect to live the same way as in your home country.”

Writing in a guest article in Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, Åkesson added that “Mass immigration has seriously damaged Sweden.”

The right-wing Sweden Democrats have gained popularity at an unprecedented rate in this country.

The latest polls show they have grown from 5.7 percent in the 2010 election to over 20 percent today.

Several polls also show them to be the largest party in Sweden.

Meanwhile, the ruling left-wing Social Democrats are at record low levels.

Liberal Prime Minister Stefan Löfvén faced recent criticism after he said in a TV interview said that “mass migration has not caused crime to increase.”

In Aftonbladet, Social Democrat columnist Lena Mellin even wrote that Löfvén was a disaster during the interview.

Meanwhile, the leader of the right-wing party The Moderates insists that Löfvén must have seen the negative impact of mass immigration.

He also said that his own party is partly responsible for creating these problems.

The Sweden Democrats are hoping to form the next conservative Swedish government by joining forces with The Moderates and the Christian Democrats.

But even if the Moderate Party has apologized for their immigration policy - during the period when they governed the country between 2006 and 2014 - many voters still don't trust them.

Things the Sweden Democrats first proposed – like banning hijabs in schools – have now have been copied by some other parties.
