Justin Trudeau Scrambles to Limit ‘Blackface’ Scandal By Vowing to Lower Taxes
Canadian prime minister tries everything to stop sinking polls
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is trying to limit the damage of last week’s blackface scandal by focusing on policies he vowed to pursue if he is reelected, including middle-class tax cuts and lowering cellphone costs.
“Canadians work hard, and they deserve to sleep easy at night. By lowering taxes and cutting cellphone bills, our Liberal team will put more than $1,500 per year back in the pockets of hardworking Canadian families,” he said, Reuters reported.
Canadians’ cell phone bills are among the highest in the world, ranging from $40 to $100.
Trudeau said his government would raise the personal income tax deduction to $15,000 for those earning below $147,000, according to CBC.
The report said in the first year the tax cut would cost $2.9 billion, then rise to $5.6 billion by 2023-2024.
Last week, Trudeau apologized after an old photo emerged showing him wearing "brownface" makeup at a party when he was a private school teacher 18 years ago.
He also confessed to wearing "blackface" in high school to perform as African-American singer Harry Belafonte, admitting that his decisions were "racist."
The photo was published by TIME magazine on Wednesday and shows then-29-year-old Trudeau at a party in 2001 wearing brown makeup on his face, neck, and hands while wearing a turban and robe.
The photo was discovered in a 2001 West Point Grey Academy yearbook.
During a Wednesday night press conference from his reelection campaign plane, Trudeau acknowledged that the costume was racist and said he should have known better.
A day later, a video emerged showing Trudeau in "blackface," making it the third racist revelation to emerge in 24 hours.
This latest bombshell footage has piled pressure onto his reelection campaign less than five weeks before voters go to the polls.
The video was published Thursday by Canadian news outlet Global News and shows Mr. Trudeau wearing a costume featuring blackface makeup and a curly black wig.
