Gunmaker Colt to Stop Producing AR-15s for Civilian Market
American gun company to stop making rifles for public amid Democrat gun control push
Gunmaker Colt Firearms is stopping production of its AR-15 semi-automatic rifles for the civilian market amid a major gun control push led by Democrats, according to a new report.
Colt's AR-15s are among the most popular sporting rifles in America and considered a go-to AR for consumers.
According to a report by Guns.com, however, Colt senior VP Paul Spitale indicated the company is shifting production toward the class 1911, Colt revolvers, and other guns Americans want for concealed carry, and away from ARs. Spitale said:
We’re going to focus on the products that our consumers are asking for.
We’ve expanded our 1911s and our revolver line, and that market has been very positive for us.
Shooting Illustrated quoted Spitale saying Colt’s decision to refocus production was based on “customer feedback.”
Spitale made clear Colt’s position on making rifles for civilians could be reversed in the future.
He suggested a U-turn could be made if the market changes to support a higher production of modern sporting rifles again.
But for now, the 1911, the King Cobra family of revolvers, and similar firearms will be Colt’s focus.
While Colt didn't acknowledge any political motivation behind the descion, the move comes amid a major gun control push by Democrats.
Most notably, calls for bans on certain weapons, including AR-15s, are being led by Democratic 2020 candidate Beto O'Rourke.
As News Thud reported, when the Beto was asked whether he would confiscate Americans' guns during the ABC News Democratic debate last Thursday, he answered, “hell yes.”
“Some of the stage have suggested a voluntary buy-back for guns in this country. You have said, ‘Americans who own AR-15s and AK-47s will have to sell them to the government, all of them.’ You know that critics call this confiscation. Are you proposing taking away their guns and how would this work?” ABC’s David Muir asked.
“I am, if it’s a weapon that was designed to kill people on a battlefield. If the high impact, high velocity round, when it hits your body, shreds everything inside of your body because it was designed to do that so you would bleed to death on a battlefield and not be able to get up and kill one of our soldiers,” O’Rourke continued.
“Hell, yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47. We’re not going to allow it to be used against a fellow American anymore,” the former Texas congressman said.

O'Rourke's 2020 rival Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) has also made similar calls for gun confiscation laws.
Harris has pledged to introduce extreme anti-Second Amendment laws that would force law-abiding Americans to surrender their guns to the government.
Harris said Monday that US citizens would be legally required to "sell" their weapons to her government under her proposed new laws.
Harris went further, saying that if she could not get the legislation through Congress to ban the further sale of assault weapons, she is “prepared to take executive action” to do so.
