NY Mayor Faces Backlash For Opening Up Homeless Shelters to Illegals
Officials argue new rule will make it easier for illegal aliens to apply

Democratic New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has come under fire after he announced that a lottery for just a few spaces in new homeless shelters would be open for illegal immigrants as well.
De Blasio said in a statement, "for too long, families without access to credit have faced barriers to the affordable housing they need."
The former rule required a credit check, but applicants will be allowed to submit evidence of rent payments under the new regulations.
But critics argued that this would make it easier for illegal aliens.
"By allowing New Yorkers to submit rental history instead of credit checks, we are creating a fairer system for all New Yorkers," de Blasio added.

City officials stated the rule overhaul would prevent adversely affecting African-Americans and Hispanics, before admitting that the program would be more accessible for illegal immigrants to apply.
Nicole Malliotakis, the Republican New York state assembly member, criticized the policy change, calling it "ridiculous."
"Another ridiculous move by @BilldeBlasio," Malliotakis said.
"There's 60k homeless in #NYC despite record spending."
"He's planning 90 shelters," she added.
"But NOW he wants to give our limited affordable housing units to citizens of OTHER countries instead of caring for our own in need."

New York City Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Queens) also slammed the Mayor for the policy change.
"It's just the latest idiotic idea to come out of this administration," Ulrich said.
"The mayor is setting up people to fail and is doing a disservice to New Yorkers who desperately need affordable housing," he concluded.
Earlier this year, de Blasio announced that all residents of New York City would receive "free" health care, including illegal aliens.
De Blasio plans to provide “free” health care" to all the city’s residents, legal or otherwise.
According to a report by ABC 7, NYC Care will ensure health care 600,000 people without health insurance in New York.
The plan is supposed to ensure care to residents regardless of their ability to pay or whether their immigration status is legal.
