A Syrian migrant who was smuggled into Sweden by an establishment journalist working for the country's broadcaster has been sentenced in court for knife crimes, according to reports.

In 2014, the then 20-year-old Syrian was smuggled into Sweden by journalist Fredrik Önnevall and three of his colleagues, all who worked for Swedish broadcaster SVT.

But liberal journalist efforts have just added to the soaring crime rates in Sweden after it was reported by Nyheter Idag that the migrant was arrested last year in April for carrying a knife in central Uppsala.

He has now been convicted and given a 2,000 Swedish Krona (£173/$209) fine.

Önnevall did not escape justice either; he was convicted and sentenced for smuggling the Syrian last year but was allowed to keep his job at SVT.

The company’s HR and Communications Director stated:

“SVT agrees with the team that they abandoned their journalistic mission in this case, but they ended up in a difficult situation and acted on humanitarian grounds and not for their own gain.”

But not long after his conviction, Önnevall told SVT he had contacted the Syrian by phone, who claimed he had a job and was doing schooling.

Despite other reports praising the migrant’s 'integration,' claiming he spoke fluent Swedish, Nyheter Idag claimed he required an interpreter during his trial.

Önnevall is not alone when it comes to public figures trying to smuggle migrants during the migrant crisis.

Swiss left-wing politician Lisa Bosia Mirra was convicted and sentenced to a fine of £7,000 after aiding 24 illegal immigrants to enter and stay in Switzerland in 2017.

Mirra had effectively illegally trafficked he migrants from Italy across the border.

And a year earlier, German Left Party politician Diether Dehm was accused of smuggling an African migrant from Italy into Germany after he picked him up near his holiday home in Lake Maggiore.

Even though Dehm admitted smuggling the migrant, charges were later dropped by investigators.

Last year, pro-immigration liberal Elin Ericsson, who was made famous after a video of her grounding a plane in the process deporting a criminal Afghan asylum seeker went viral, faced up to six months on jail for breaking aviation laws.

Prosecutors in Sweden have confirmed they indicted the 21-year-old in 2018.
