Pelosi Defends Cummings After Trump Attack, Calls Jared Kushner a 'Slumlord'
House Speaker says president projecting his own 'insecurity' on Cummings.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi defended Rep. Elijah Cummings following the attacks from President Donald Trump calling out the conditions of the Baltimore-area district he represents.
Pelosi, who was born in Baltimore, and whose brother and father were both mayors of the city, said Trump was projecting his own "insecurity" on Cummings.
She also took aim at Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, calling him a "slumlord."
"To see the president demean a great leader like Elijah Cummings shows his own insecurity and his own lack of understanding about what progress really is," Pelosi said.
"You really have to consider the source," she continued.
"The president without — and this comes as no surprise — really doesn't know what he's talking about. But maybe he could ask his son-in-law, who's a slumlord."
Elijah Cummings (D-MD) skipped a tour of a Housing and Urban Development (HUD) facility in Baltimore on Wednesday, after being invited by HUD Secretary Ben Carson.
The Maryland Democrat rejected the invitation, according to reports.
Carson was asked about Cummings’ absence during a press conference after the tour.
Mr. Carson says he doesn't know why Cummings refused to join the tour but said he assumed there must have been a scheduling issue.
Trump called Baltimore “a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.”
“No human being would want to live there,” Trump tweeted over the weekend.
"Baltimore’s numbers are the worst in the United States on Crime and the Economy," Trump tweeted Monday.
"Billions of dollars have been pumped in over the years, but to no avail. The money was stolen or wasted. Ask Elijah Cummings, where it went. He should investigate himself with his Oversight Committee!"
It is still unclear whether Democrats will offer a similar response to Trump's attack on Cummings, which many Democrats accuse the Presdi3nt of 'firing up' white conservatives.
Last week, Trump called Cummings a 'racist ' in response to the Democrats pulling out the race card.
Trump made the direct statements describing the current state of Baltimore on Saturday as he accused Cummings of failing to represent his district well.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi along with other angry Democrats, responded to the president's remarks by accusing him of 'racism' and attacking minority members of Congress.
"If racist Elijah Cummings would focus more of his energy on helping the good people of his district, and Baltimore itself, perhaps progress could be made in fixing the mess that he has helped to create over many years of incompetent leadership. His radical 'oversight' is a joke!" Trump tweeted.
