Trump: Baltimore Residents 'Thanking' Me For Exposing 'Corruption'
President remarks come amid feud with Elijah Cummings
President Donald Trump claims residents of Baltimore, particularly in African-American communities, are calling to thank him for exposing the corruption in the district.
The president has faced backlash from Democrats after calling Baltimore “a disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess."
Trump is now locked in a feud with Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., who the president accused of "incompetent leadership."
"If racist Elijah Cummings would focus more of his energy on helping the good people of his district, and Baltimore itself, perhaps progress could be made in fixing the mess that he has helped to create over many years of incompetent leadership. His radical 'oversight' is a joke!" Trump tweeted.
The president dismissed the notion when asked if he was hurting himself with comments.
“I think I’m helping myself because I’m pointing out the corruption in Baltimore,” Trump responded.
“The White House and myself have received more phone calls from the people of Baltimore and other cities thanking me.”
“Those people are living in hell from Baltimore—they’re largely African-American. They really appreciate what I’m doing, and they’ve let me know it. They really appreciate it,” Trump continued.
Trump noted that unemployment for African-Americans has been “the lowest in the history of our country” under his administration.
“What I’ve done for African-Americans, I would say no president has done,” Trump said.
“They are so happy about what I’ve been able to do in Baltimore and other Democrat corrupt cities…They are so thankful they called me and said, finally somebody is telling the truth.”
The president added he feels “so sorry” for the people of Baltimore, and that “if they ask me, we will get involved.”
“African-American people love the job I’m doing because I’m working for them—not the politicians.”
The Baltimore controversy exploded after Trump said conditions in Baltimore were “more dangerous” than those at the border in response to Cummings criticism of border patrol officials.
The Democrats immediate pulled out the race card, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.
“I am the least racist person of anyone,” Trump said Tuesday.
“Al Sharpton is a racist.”
“Cummings should take his oversight committee and take them down to Baltimore and study the billions and billions of dollars that’s been stolen,” Trump said.
“They ought to take that beautiful waste of an oversight committee and take a look at Baltimore and other Democratic-run cities.”
