The president's 'go back' remarks could well boost his reelection chances in 2020

Despite the negative narrative, the left-leaning media's spin on President Donald Trump's recent "go back" comments is going in the president's favor for 2020.

Though 2020 candidates like Bernie Sanders say Trump may be crazy, the president's remarks could well boost his reelection chances next year.

The theory could clarify why Trump is targeting the minority congresswomen, otherwise known as “The Squad,” who has become a collective firebrand of liberal politics which could cost the Democrats the house in 2020.

According to Ford O’Connell, a Republican strategist who converses with the White House on a regular basis:

“He wants to keep it on celebrity versus celebrity, and ideology versus ideology, rather than solutions because he wants to tell you their ideology is going to creep into the policy solutions that the eventual 2020 Democratic presidential nominee puts forward,” Mr. O’Connell said.

The move could prove very smart for Trump in the run-up to 2020.

Nearly nine-in-ten Republican voters said they support President Donald Trump's comments indirectly telling members of the Democratic 'Squad' to “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came.”

Other polls suggest Trump could be in a much better footing than the 'Squad,' consisting Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, all of whom have whipped up a media frenzy in recent weeks.

According to the latest Real Clear Politics average of polls, 44% of voters approve of the job Trump is doing, and 52% disapprove.

The new internal Democrat poll in swing districts released on Sunday, both Ocasio-Cortez and Omar were shredded.

According to the Axios report:

"Ocasio-Cortez was recognized by 74% of voters in the poll; 22% had a favorable view."

"Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota — another member of The Squad — was recognized by 53% of the voters; 9% (not a typo) had a favorable view."

I echoed a March Quinnipiac University poll which quizzed both Democrats and Republicans regarding the 29-year-old New York socialist and found that those who know who she is, don't like what they see.

The survey also showed that 33% said Ms. Ocasio-Cortez has been good for the Democratic Party, and 36% said she has been bad for the party.

Assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, Tim Malloy, said that “all is definitely not A-OK for AOC.”

“Most voters either don’t like the firebrand freshman congresswoman or don’t know who she is,” Mr. Malloy added.

O’Connell added that Trump has been waiting for the chance to tie Democrats to the group.

And the opportunity arose last week when Ocasio-Cortez accused House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of singling out minority members of the Democratic caucus.

Following Trump's "go back" comments, Democrats rallied behind the Squad and demanded the president apologize for his “racist” and “xenophobic” remarks.

But Trump painted a different picture:

“The Dems were trying to distance themselves from the four ‘progressives,’ but now they are forced to embrace them,” he tweeted.

“That means they are endorsing Socialism, hate of Israel and the USA! Not good for the Democrats!”

He said that the four liberals received a “free pass and a big embrace from the Democrat Party” and that “Democrats are afraid to take them on. Sad!”

“Omar is polling at 8%, Cortez at 21%,” Trump said.

“Nancy Pelosi tried to push them away, but now they are forever wedded to the Democrat Party. See you in 2020!”

According to Amy Walter, of the nonpartisan Cook Political Report - “The Squad” fight is exactly where Trump wants 2020 to be fought.”

“The more media/Dems engage him, the better for him,” Ms. Walter said in a Twitter post.

“All this fight does is re-polarize the partisans and leaves the up-for-grabs voters (who want to hear about bread-butter issues) tuned out.”
