American hockey coach stands firm against players refusing to sing national anthem

An American hockey coach, who is still yet to be identified, has gone viral on Twitter after he told his players to respect the national anthem.

Amid the media frenzy surrounding the women's soccer team and the NFL's Colin Kaepernick who have politicized sporting events, it seems this coach was having none of it.

In the now viral video, the unidentified coach told his players:

“We’re not women’s soccer. We’re not the NFL. If there’s anybody here who is going to be disrespectful to either the American or the Canadian national anthem, grab your gear and get the f**k out now because you’ll never see the ice in this arena."

"We don’t have that problem in hockey, we’re better than that, but there was no sense in wasting anybody’s time if that sh*t was going to happen."

His comments come as protests against the national anthem sweep cross the NFL and most recently Megan Rapinoe, who refused to honor the national anthem for the women’s national soccer team.

Some of the Twitter comments praised the coaches stance:

This is why hockey coaches are awesome. There’s no fat on the bone with them. They just cut straight to the point, and it’s why I love the sport and the coaches so much.

I can’t get a read on the logo on this guy’s jacket, but I’m guessing he must be a coach at some level of junior hockey.

Otherwise, why would he say the Canadian and American anthem? It’s either that or he’s coaching a low-level pro team.

Either way, that guy clearly loves America.

But this isn't the first time a coach has taken a stand like this, in February John Tortorella told players he would bench them if they didn't properly honor the national anthem.

Colin Kaepernick, who took a knee during the national anthem, has helped politicise American sport

Last year, Mississippi Law Enforcement Agency announced it would no longer be using Nike products in response to it's controversial "Just Do It" ad campaign featuring Colin Kaepernick.

Mississippi’s public safety commissioner says that the department does not support vendors who don't support law enforcement.

“As commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, I will not support vendors who do not support law enforcement and our military,” Commissioner Marshall Fisher told The Associated Press.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant (R) also supported the move.

“I support the commissioner’s decision,” Bryant said, adding that the commissioner has the right to choose from which brands his department buys.

"[A]and it’s not going to be a company that pays an individual who has slandered our fine men and women in law enforcement,” he said.

Following Colin Kaepernick's footsteps, the women’s national team has become more political, particularly concerning Megan Rapinoe.

The athlete protested the national anthem during the World Cup and refused to put her hand over heart during "The Star-Spangled Banner" — as an apparent "F you" to President Trump.

Describing herself as a 'walking protest' because she is a gay woman, Rapinoe made waves when she told the media that there is no way she’d be going to the "f***ing White House" if invited by Trump.

The team has protested a reported gender wage gap in the sport, despite the men being paid a lower percentage of their generated revenue than the women’s players.
