Democrat slams U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) suggesting it is “un-American” for them to detain illegal immigrants.

The controversial congresswoman also called for the agency to be defunded on Thursday evening, sparking a huge Twitter row.

“ICE is requesting 500 beds from Sherburne County to detain immigrants,” she wrote.

“It’s un-American to criminalize immigrants for wanting to come to this country for a better life. This is why ICE needs to be defunded”

The immigrants Omar was referring to were illegal, which she failed to note.

The Sherburne County jail hosts 300 beds for ICE, but the agency recently requested more expansion:

In response to ICE's request, the county sent a preliminary proposal for additional detention space within 100 miles of its St. Paul field office at Fort Snelling, according to county officials.

Though CE’s deadline for proposals was May 20, it is not clear if they will pursue them.

Yesterday, Omar was hit with campaign finance violation fines after she used funds for personal use, including a cover-up operation of claims she married her brother.

On Thursday, the board revealed that Omar had been fined for violating state campaign finance rules, in part due to expenditures that arose from setting up a "crisis committee" to tackle allegations that she was once married to her biological brother.

The board published its findings, showing that the Democratic congresswoman used campaign funds for personal travel and hotel expenses, to pay a law firm to review her tax and immigration records, and to pay an accountant to fix her personal tax filings.

Last month, the Democratic rep said she brought “the perspective of a foreigner” to U.S. foreign policy, according to an interview with a hometown newspaper in Minnesota.

According to The Minneapolis Star-Tribune:

“The Somali-born Minnesota Democrat, saying she brings ‘the perspective of a foreigner’ to her new role, believes that American foreign policy needs to be changed in fundamental ways.”
