Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi argued that President Donald Trump's threats to impose tariffs on Mexican imports amid the looming border crisis are just a distraction from special counsel Robert Mueller’s report.

Pelosi claims that the now concluded Mueller report, which cleared the Trump administration of any collusion with Russia, was somehow related to the Trump's dispute with Mexico.

“It’s a distraction from the Mueller report, and it’s served its purpose, and here we are,” Pelosi told reporters.

But White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney said that Trump was "deadly serious" about levying a 5% tariff on Mexican goods if the Mexican government if they don't step up enforcement on the southern side of the border.

Trump threatened to impose a 5% tariff on Mexico beginning June 10 before jumping up by 5% each month if they fail to corporate on stemming the influx of migrants.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador "hinted his country could tighten migration controls to defuse U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on Mexican goods."

Lopez Obrador said that the Mexican government has ramped up immigration enforcement and they are now turning back migrant caravans.

“The main thing is to inform about what we’re already doing on the migration issue, and if it’s necessary to reinforce these measures without violating human rights, we could be prepared to reach that deal,” Lopez Obrador said Sunday.

“I think the Senate probably has the votes to override,” Pelosi said.

“But we haven’t seen anything yet. We haven’t seen anything that we would be overruling and then going to the next step.”

Pelosi said imposing tariffs “is not the way to treat a friend, and it’s not a way to deal with immigration. It’s not a way to deal with the humanitarian crisis at the border.”

On Tuesday, top Mexican diplomats issued a subversive threat stating that 250,000 more Central American migrants could enter the US.

Mexico’s Foreign Relations Secretariat stated on Monday arguing that the country was already giving humanitarian visas to migrants and effectively strengthening immigration enforcement.
