Just days after the private company 'We Build the Wall' announced the construction of a half-mile wall along a section of the U.S.-Mexico border, a legal dispute erupted between the contractors and the New Mexico Mayor who argues they didn't obtain proper permission.

The private company started construction of the border fence on private land in Sunland Park, N.M., last Friday using funds raised through crowdfunding.

Even though the company planned to have construction completed by Friday, Sunland Park’s Mayor Javier Perea said that the 18-foot fence exceeds the city’s maximum height of 6 feet.

The Mayor then issued a cease-and-desist order on Wednesday.

Co-founder of We Build the Wall, Dustin Stockton, claimed the company was undeterred by Perea, arguing that the company complied with city regulations.

“Sunland Park sent out a building inspector out to inspect the site before we started building,” Stockton said.

“There was an inspector on site when we did the first concrete pour, and each time along the way we were permitted to continue to build while our application was processed.”

The cease-and-desist has been turned over to a municipal court, Perea told KOAT 7.

"Buckle up, we're just getting started!" the group wrote in a Facebook post, sharing what it said were images of construction over the weekend.

We Build the Wall announced they would hold a rally Thursday in support of finishing the project.

Organizers say the sections as built faster and more cheaply than the government has been able to manage in recent years.

The former secretary of state in Kansas and an informal immigration adviser to President Trump, Kris Kobach, stated he the New Mexico project has the president’s blessings.
