Pope Francis has weighed in on abortion saying it can never be condoned, even when the fetus is gravely sick or facing death.

The Pontiff called on doctors and priests to support families to carry out such pregnancies to term.

Francis said at the Vatican-sponsored anti-abortion conference that the opposition to abortion isn’t a religious issue but a human one.

“Is it licit to throw away a life to resolve a problem?” he asked.

“Is it licit to hire a hitman to resolve a problem?”

The Pope went on to condemn determinations to abort based on prenatal testing, insisting that a human being is “never incompatible with life.”

Francis added that even babies destined to die at birth or soon after that deserve to appropriate medical care in the womb.

He also added that the parents need support, so they don't feel afraid or isolated.

While one can argue about using medical resources this way, there is value to it for the parents, he said.

“Taking care of these children helps parents to grieve and not only think of it as a loss, but as a step on a path taken together,” Francis said.

Francis also expressed sympathy for women who have had them and made it easier for them to be absolved of the sin of abortion.

According to The Vatican News: Francis described children in the womb who have pathological conditions, as “small patients.”

Advances in pharmacology and surgery have reduced “the gap between diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities, which for years was one of the causes of voluntary abortion and abandonment of care at the birth of many children with serious diseases.”

The medical profession, he said, is “a mission”: doctors should be “capable of entering into a relationship,” and of “committing themselves to always finding solutions that respect the dignity of every human life.”

This is especially important in the case of children who are likely “to die immediately after childbirth,” said the Pope.

Taking care of these children “helps parents to process mourning… That child will remain in their lives forever”.

“Abortion,” said Pope Francis, “is never the answer.”

“Human life is sacred and inviolable, and the use of prenatal diagnosis for selective purposes must be strongly discouraged because it is the expression of an inhuman eugenic mentality, which deprives families of the possibility of welcoming, embracing and loving their weakest children,” he said
