Planned Parenthood and The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit on Friday challenging Alabama’s recently passed abortion ban as 'unconstitutional.'

“This law is blatantly unconstitutional, and the ACLU will not stand by while politicians emboldened by President Trump’s anti-abortion agenda exploit our health and our lives for political gain,” said Alexa Kolbi-Molinas, senior staff attorney at the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project.

Under the ban, doctors could face felony charges for performing abortions.

The bill exempts doctors who perform abortions to protect the life of the mother, not including pregnancies caused by rape or incest.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R), who recently signed the bill, acknowledged that it is unenforceable.

Supporters of the bill say it is intentionally designed to challenge the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationally and may now spark court cases that might prompt the justices to revisit Roe.

Actress Reese Witherspoon has joined with other fellow Hollywood activists in condemning the new legislation outlawing abortion in half-dozen states when a heartbeat is detected.

The actor slammed the new law describing the “new abortion bans” on Twitter as “unconstitutional,” “abhorrent,” and “an attack on women’s fundamental rights.”

"I’m beyond upset about the passing of new abortion bans in Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, Georgia, and Ohio," Witherspoon said.

“This is Unconstitutional and Abhorrent. We can not tolerate this attack on women’s fundamental rights.”

According to a new poll by Marist in February, nearly half of all Americans oppose abortion and consider themselves "pro-life."

The poll suggests that 47 percent of Americans identify as "pro-life" and 47 percent "pro-choice."

The dramatic shift was led by Democrats and those under 45 years old, according to a survey taken Feb.12-17 following recent reports of states legalizing abortion up until birth.
