French president Emmanuel Macron has had a rude awakening as results from an EU election poll revealed a surge in support for Marine Le Pen's right-wing party National Rally (RN).

Macron has faced with historic uprisings in France over the past year including the Yellow Vests movement which began as a protest against fuel taxes hikes, but later expanded into a more anti-globalism stance.

But now Marine Le Pen's right-wing party is surprisingly expected to outstrip French President Emmanuel Macron's La Republique En Marche in the upcoming European Parliament elections, which will take place between 23-26 May, with 22 percent of the vote, according to the Ipsos poll.

But other polls have also suggested RN's leading position.

The poll of 1,500 people was conducted on 2-3 May after President Macron announced a set of measures, inclduing 5 billion worth of tax cuts ($5.6 billion), in an attempt to quell the yellow vest protests.

In a bid to reconnect with voters, Macron unveiled a 10-billion-euro package of tax cuts and income top-ups for the working poor and pensioners.

But Macron was swiftly accused of removing the yellow vests priority demands of the table, including the return of a popular "solidarity tax" on the rich, which he removed.

Another yellow vest demand was citizen-sponsored referendums, which Macron has failed to honor.

At the beginning of 2019, 75 percent of French citizens disapproved of Macron's government, according to a poll by Odexa.

The poll, which was conducted by Adoxa and Dentsu Consulting for France Info and Le Figaro, revealed that just 25% percent said they were happy with Macron's government.

The figures show an alarming loss of popularity for Macron compared to April 2018 when a poll revealed just 59 percent of unhappy citizens, according to France Info.

The new poll, which surveyed 1,004 people across France, was completed in early January.
