House Democrat Threatens Trump Officials With Jail For Refusing to Testify
Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) says Dems are willing to go to great lengths
Trump administration officials have been threatened with jail by a member of the House Oversight Committee if they keep "assaulting" the legislature at the president's behest, according to reports.
Member of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that the Democrats are prepared to go to great lengths to pursue Trump officials unwilling to go before the committee so far.
"We're going to resist, and if a subpoena is issued and you're told you must testify, we will back that up," Connolly said.
"And we will use any and all power in our command to make sure it's backed up – whether that's a contempt citation, whether that's going to court and getting that citation enforced, whether it's fines, whether it's possible incarceration," Connolly said.
Connolly vowed to "go to the max" to stop what he described as "an assault on the legislative branch of our government."
Architect of Trump's hardline immigration policy; Stephen Miller, former Executive Office official Carl Kline, and top Justice Department officialJohn Gore, have all defied requests.
A counsel for Kline said that he was advised not to appear.
Kline's attorney said in a letter to the committee's chairman this week that "they will follow the instructions of the one that employs him."
The Department of Justice also said that Gore would not return the request unless he has his counsel present, a demand previously rejected by the Democrats.
Meanwhile, the White House is fighting a subpoena for the former White House counsel Don McGahn to testify over allegations that Trump obstructed justice throughout the Mueller investigation, despite it concluding no evidence of collusion.
Trump argued that the slew of subpoenas is another politicized attempt to disrupt his presidency and gain free political points by the Democrats.
"The Democrats are trying to win 2020. The only way they can luck out is by constantly going after me on nonsense," Trump fired back on Wednesday.
