Border Patrol agents say group in need of medical care at border

Border patrol agents have confirmed the arrest of 247 illegal immigrants - some in need of medical care - who turned themselves in after attempting to cross the border early Wednesday.

The migrant group - made up of mostly family units and unaccompanied minors from Central America - is believed to be part of an elaborate smuggling operation.

The group is in need of medical care, border agents have confirmed.

"Unscrupulous organized smugglers are exploiting the area and the proximity to the border to move large groups of people," a press release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.

"These groups of people are told where to cross and turn themselves in with smugglers never having to cross the border themselves and risk apprehension,” the releases added.

The long journey from Mexico to the U.S, which has been repeatedly discouraged by President Donald Trump, has been branded as “dangerous” and “treacherous" by officials.

The news comes after at least 500 migrants began traveling from Central America to the United States border from Honduras yesterday.

The migrant caravan left the northern city of San Pedro Sula earlier than expected.

The group included some mothers carrying their young children on their shoulders, embarking on a perilous journey that President Donald Trump repeatedly warned them not to take.

But criminal organizations are accountable for at least 24 large groups who are migrants who are being trafficked in the Lordsburg area, according to a report from kfoxtv.

They said illegal organized smugglers are exploiting the area and the proximity to the border to move large groups of people.

The migrants are told where to cross and turn themselves in with smugglers never having to cross the border themselves and risk apprehension.

The 24 large groups are for that area alone and do not take into account the number of arrests made in other areas within the El Paso Sector, according to the Border Patrol.

Texas border officials launched a new law enforcement unit aimed at countering human trafficking in the Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday.

The specific human trafficking unit will watch for forced labor in the agricultural sector, according to Hidalgo County District Attorney Ricardo Rodriguez, Jr.
