Pedophile Giuseppe Matarazzo was shot dead after being freed from jail

A pedophile priest, who was shot dead after walking free from prison, was killed by hitmen hired by the father of a victim who committed suicide as a result of the abuse she'd suffered, according to police.

Police investigators in Italy believe 45-year-old Giuseppe Matarazzo was murdered after being freed from jail, serving only 11 months for sexually abusing two young girls.

Matarazzo died in a shooting in the town of Frasso Telesino, around 35 miles north of Naples, in July last year.

He was shot five times from an SUV after being called over and asked for directions from one of the passengers.

Police have now arrested two men -  Generoso Nastam, 30, and Giuseppe Massaro, 55 - who they believe were driving the vehicle used for the murder.

The father of a 15-year-old girl who was abused by Matarazzo is also being investigated but has not yet been arrested.

The child committed suicide after her rapist was jailed for 11 and a half years for the abuse.

State prosecutor Aldo Policastro told Repubblica that Matarazzo's death was "certainly on commission... for revenge," describing Friday's arrests as only the "first step" in their investigation.

According to the Daily Mail, Policastro said that no direct link had been discovered between the victim's father and the two men, meaning there were likely intermediaries who introduced them.

While police believe Massaro acquired the .357 magnum pistol used in the crime, they do not think he pulled the trigger, and are still hunting for the shooter.

Investigators believe that Massaro used a Fiat Croma registered to a family member to help carry out the crime.

They say inspections of the car's GPS show that it drove to the location of the murder for several days beforehand, and was there on the day in question.

After the day of the murder, the vehicle did not return to the spot again.

Investigators crossed GPS data with data from the cell phone tower in Frasso Telesino, placing Massaro at the scene of the murder in the days before, and at the time of the crime, and then never returning to the area.

Massaro also matched the description from a witness who claims to have seen him crossing a road to Sant'Agata de Goti on the night of July 19 with a plaque covered with duct tape.

State prosecutor Aldo Policastro says the two men were hired by someone with 'an imposing motive'

Police revealed that the two men arrested have no connection to the pedophile priest, or even with the family of his dead victim.

According to Policastro, the men must have been hired by those who had a motive, defining it as "an imposing motive."

Conversations intercepted from Massaro's phone led officers to Generoso Nastam, they revealed.

The messages also showed that Massaro was looking to obtain fake identity papers in order to escape from Italy.

Both men are due in front of magistrates in the coming days for questioning.
