Abolishment of the 50 year old rule is being pushed by Democratic Rep. Jared Huffman.

House Democrats are looking to block a Capitol Hill regulation that permits members of Congress to carry firearms on Capitol grounds and keep them in their offices.

The abolishment of the rule, which has been in place for 50 years, is being pushed by California Democratic Rep. Jared Huffman.

Huffman had expanded the support of the ban of Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi D-Calif., who is now attempting a return to the House speakership following the democrat majority win in November.

“I don’t think we can just keep looking the other way or sweep this issue under the rug,” Huffman, told The Washington Post.

“Our political climate is too volatile and there are too many warning signs that we need to address things like this.”

According to a Pelosi spokesman, she would command authorities to “revisit” the regulation if elected.

The move is more about “theatrics” that concerns about "public safety," according to a Republican lawmaker

Huffman and Pelosi are seeking to “solve a problem that doesn’t exist,” Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie explained.

Huffman merely has heard rumors of colleagues keeping guns int heir offices but doesn't have correct knowledge of the specific instances

It is not clear how common it is for lawmakers to keep firearms in their offices at the Capitol, and there Capitol authorities do not keep records of which ones possess guns, according to the sergeant at arms

Despite this, members of Congress would have to comply with strict firearm laws to bring a gun to Capitol Hill.

House Democrats are also preparing to push for new legislation that will criminalize private selling of guns in the United States.

Dems plan to launch the new anti-gun measure as soon as the new Congress is in sessions, according to reports.

A report by Mother Jones reveals that Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) has held meetings with gun control groups that included Everytown for Gun Safety, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, the Center for American Progress, and Gabby Giffords’ group.
