Police have issued a warning to parents after several scalpel and razor blades were found attached to the inside of a slide in a children's playground.

A number of blades were discretely fixed using clear tape in a bid to inflict serious injuries to any child that would use the play equipment in West Lancashire, UK.

The blades were fastened to the slide at the Winifred Lane Play area in Aughton, near Ormskirk, in a position that could have caused serious injury to children playing there.

Ormskirk and Burscough police wrote on Facebook: "Parents, please be aware that razor blades/knife blades have been attached to the side of the children's slide at the Winifred Lane Play area in Aughton this morning.

"We would ask everyone to be vigilant and check any play equipment before you let your child use it.

"If anyone has any information about this we'd urge them to contact us as soon as possible.

"Whoever did this could have caused serious injury to a child - please be assured we are fully investigating this matter."

Police warned that the incident may not be an isolated case, and urged parents to check all play equipment before allowing children to use it.

Images of the blades that were posted online have left people reacting with shock at seeing them.

One wrote: "What a sick and twisted thing to think up!! Disturbing."

Another person posted online: "Seeing this has turned my stomach. This is psychopath behaviour IMO. Very disturbing . Police need to spend time on this case. Shocking."

Another person posted on Facebook: "When you think you can’t be shocked anymore and you read this! Catch them and throw away the key!"

According to the BBC, Doreen Stephenson, a councilor for Aughton Park, labeled the culprits a "disgrace," adding: "It's quite frightening to think what the consequences could be."

Police urged "everyone to be vigilant."

Ms. Stephenson said: "I can't believe anybody would stoop so low to do something like this in a public children's play area.

"It's an absolute disgrace."

'Absolutely horrified'

Police urged parents to "check any play equipment before you let your child use it."

"Whoever did this could have caused serious injury to a child - please be assured we are fully investigating this matter," they added.

Another local ward councillor, David Westley, said the park was run by the parish council and they would be passing any useful CCTV footage on to police.

He added: "I'm absolutely horrified. It's impossible to comprehend why anyone would do such a thing."

People commenting on the police Facebook post branded the vandals "disgusting," "sick," and "horrible."
