The man, who was recently arrested for raping a two-week-old baby, has been attacked in jail by fellow inmates and moved to a secure unit at a prison hospital.

The horrific attack shocked the world when the 12-day-old newborn baby was rushed to the intensive care unit of the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children after being raped on September 30.

A 25-year-old man was charged with rape and grievous bodily harm as the unidentified two-week-old baby from the tiny seaside village of Annalong, County Down in Northern Ireland was left fighting for its life in the hospital in Belfast.

The attacker was identified by a relative of the child who had walked into a room and witnessed an alleged rape on a Sunday night.

The infant's family member immediately called the Police and the suspect was arrested within hours.

A source from the children's hospital told the Sun Newspaper: “There was a lot of blood.

"The injuries are very severe and it has absolutely shocked staff.

“No one had ever seen anything like it.”

After being arrested, the unnamed man was taken to "the UK's most dangerous prison;" HMP Maghaberry in Northern Ireland.

Since being locked up, the alleged rapist was being kept in a single cell on 24-hour guard in jail to "stop other prisoners from attacking him."

The pedophile is treated as a "Special Person At Risk" - meaning inmates such as terrorists and murderers are being kept away from him.

Despite receiving round-the-clock protection, fellow prisoners were still able to attack him by "punching and kicking" the sick child abuser.

The extent of his injuries have not been revealed, although he has now been moved to a prison hospital where he is being treated.

According to the Daily Mail, an inmate suspected of launching the attack has been stripped of privileges as a prison orderly.

A source told The Sun: "It was a few digs, just for a few seconds.

"Then there was some panic and staff moved in to sort it out."

The young baby is from Annalong, which is about 35 miles south of Belfast and has a population of around 2,000 people.

One man who said he had lived in the village for 15 years said: “This is just surreal, something like this.

“It’s hard to believe this kind of thing can happen but for it to happen here is just surreal.”

Mourne Cllr Henry Reilly said: “In my 30 years as an elected representative here I have never seen such anger and fury – I’m not exaggerating.

“People are upset and really struck with what has happened to this child and they want justice.”
