NSA Quietly Deletes Years Of 'Illegally Collected' Wiretap Data From Its Records
The spying agency claimed 'technical irregularities' was the reason for deletion

The National Security Agency (NSA) has issued a statement announcing it was scrubbing several years worth of call records gathered foreign intelligence surveillance wiretaps that it collected illegally, according to reports.
The spying agency claimed that "technical irregularities" was the reason that caused the oversight.
CDR's are handed over by telecommunications providers and contain metadata, which includes phone numbers as well as the time and duration of the call.
Although, the actual content of the calls isn't monitored by the system.
Yesterday, Neon Nettle reported that the NSA is now using internet data processing centers run by telecommunications powerhouse AT&T in order to spy on American citizens according to a new investigation.
The Intercept has highlighted eight AT&T facilities across the US which are allegedly NSA 'spy hubs' being used by the surveillance agency to monitor internet users' emails, social media posts, and even internet browsing.

According to ZeroHedge: Skype (and therefore Microsoft), however, provides a bit more to the US Government as revealed by Edward Snowden - handing the NSA "buddy lists, credit card data, call records and user account information," and possibly the plaintext inside of messages, according to Arstechnica.
“NSA is deleting the CDRs because several months ago NSA analysts noted technical irregularities in some data received from telecommunications service providers,” said the NSA.
“These irregularities also resulted in the production to NSA of some CDRs that NSA was not authorized to receive.”
The revelation comes after an annual transparency report issued by the Director of National Intelligence showed that the NSA collected well over 500 million U.S. call detail records in 2017 — more than three times the number gathered the previous year.

The NSA said that it is deleting all call detail records gathered since 2015 because it was “infeasible” for the agency to isolate the data it was authorized to receive from the rest of it.
The NSA said it notified relevant oversight committees in Congress, as well as the Department of Justice and the independent Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, of the decision. -The Hill
“The root cause of the problem has since been addressed for future CDR acquisitions, and NSA has reviewed and revalidated its intelligence reporting to ensure that the reports were based on properly received CDRs,” said the NSA.
A May transparency report revealed that the NSA collected over 500 million US call detail records in 2017 - over 3x the number gathered in 2016.
