President Donald Trump has canceled his long-awaited meeting with North Korea leader Kim Jong-un just hours after the country destroyed its nuclear testing sites.

Trump blamed Kim Jong-un's s "open hostility" for the decision of canceling the meeting, which was due to take place on June 12.

Trump warned the leader: "you talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used".

Asia correspondent Tom Cheshire, a British journalist, reported a series of explosions from the e facility just ahead of planned talks between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

According to North Kores state media, the nuclear site has been completely dismantled to " ensure the transparency of discontinuance of nuclear test".

The Telegraph reports:  Trump said he was calling off the meeting because of North Korea's aggressive rhetoric in recent days.

"I was very much looking forward to being there with you. Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting," the president said.

Mr Trump kept open the possibility for future talks with Kim, saying: "If you change your mind having to do with this most important summit, please do not hesitate to call or write".

In a significant shift in tone from a just a few weeks ago, Mr Trump said "the world, and North Korea in particular, has lost a great opportunity for lasting peace and great prosperity and wealth."
