Finland Ready to Close Border over Looming Migrant Surge
Minister Ohisalo said country could lose its border
Finland’s Interior Minister Maria Ohisalo warned the country would close its border if it faces the same migrant surge Poland and the Baltic States saw last week.
Minister Ohisalo said if Finland is subjected to the same sort of “hybrid warfare,” it could lose its border.
Many have accused Belarus of sending migrants across its border with European Union member-states.
Migrants have used Finland as an entry point to the European Union via its border with Russia.
“It is quite clear that this is a hybrid impact," Ohisalo told the Finnish broadcaster YLE this week.
"Belarus is trying to divide EU countries while at the same time making them violate international conventions."
Ohisalo said asylum seekers would be treated individually and said women; children would be protected.
But he warned that many Middle Eastern migrants are being used as a weapon by the regime of President Alexander Lukashenko.
The head of the Situation and Risk Analysis Centre of the Border Guard, Mikko Lehmus, isn't confident the Finnish border can be fully closed.
Other countries like Poland and Greece have already completed border barriers in an effort to stop illegal immigrants from coming into their countries.
“[A]ttention is focused on Finland’s long eastern border," Lehmus said.
"It must be clear to everyone that it cannot be comprehensively fenced or covered by other obstacle devices."
Last week, frontiers of NATO and the EU saw violent clashes with migrants as Poland desperately attempted ot defend its border with Belarus.
Ariel footage released by Polish authorities shows border guards and soldiers trying to hold back thousands of migrants armed with shovels, axes, and wire cutters.
Migrants from the Middle East are trying to violently force their way into Poland at the border with Belarus. They’ve broken through the wire fencing. They want to go to Germany & Northern Europe for the generous public benefits. pic.twitter.com/WHP2LaQLGX— Andy Ngô 🏳️🌈 (@MrAndyNgo) November 8, 2021
