The people of Minneapolis have risen up against the city's far-left Democrats and rejected a proposal to replace the police department with an experimental "Department of Public Safety."

Voters rejected the ballot initiative that would have completely abolished and replaced the Minneapolis Police Department.

The new department may have included police if necessary to accomplish its public safety role, but it wasn't guaranteed, according to the measure.

"This amendment would create a Department of Public Safety combining public safety functions through a comprehensive public health approach to be determined by the Mayor and Council," according to the proposal.

"The department would be led by a Commissioner nominated by the Mayor and appointed by the Council.

"The Police Department, and its chief, would be removed from the City Charter."

"The Public Safety Department could include police officers, but the minimum funding requirement would be eliminated," an explanatory note about the proposal added.

Prominent Minnesota Democrats were split on the proposal, however.

According to the Washington Post, U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar and the state's attorney general Keith Ellison backed and promoted the plan.

Meanwhile, Gov. Tim Walz and U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar opposed the proposal.

Omar (D-MN), a prominent advocate of the "defund the police" movement, has claimed that cops are to blame for the soaring crimes rates in Minneapolis.

Since Democratic city officials slashed the Minneapolis Police Department's budget last year, violent crime has been skyrocketing in the city.

According to Omar, however, the alarming rise in crime is because "police have chosen to not fulfill their oath."

"The lawmaker’s comments come as violent crime has surged in Minnesota over the last year, rising 17% in total while setting records for murders,” Fox News reported.

"Minneapolis, the state’s largest city, has had to fight the surge while its police department suffers from staffing and morale problems after the death of George Floyd in the city, something some say has fueled the crime surge.”

Despite the measure being rejected, the proposal wasn't without its support.

A sizable proportion of voters appear to have voted in favor of it based on the election results so far.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the results show 56% voted against the measure and 44% voted in favor of it.

Minneapolis was the epicenter of a nationwide debate over issues of race and policing that erupted in the wake of the death of George Floyd last year.
