Joe Biden Demands DOJ Prosecute Trump Supporters for Defying Congressional Subpoenas
'I hope that the committee goes after them'
Joe Biden said the Justice Department should prosecute Trump allies who are defying Congressional subpoenas to testify to the January 6th select committee.
Biden was asked about Trump associates like Steve Bannon, who defied the subpoena, citing for 45th president's executive privilege.
Biden said he wanted Trump loyalists prosecuted if they refused to appear before the committee to investigate who stormed Capitol Hill on January 6th.
“I hope that the committee goes after them and holds them accountable,” Biden said.
When Biden was asked if Trump loyalists should be prosecuted by the Justice Department for defying subpoenas, he said, “I do, yes.”
But Biden's answer goes against his repeated claimed the Justice Department would remain independent on issues of prosecution.
For instance, Biden told CNN’s Jake Tapper in December 2020:
“Our Justice Department is going to operate independently on those issues, how to respond to any of that."
“I am not going to be telling them what they have to do and don’t have to do,” he continued.
“I am not going to be saying, go prosecute, A, B, or C.”
Earlier this week, Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff warned that Trump associates who do not cooperate with the committee examining the January 6 riot would be referred to the DOJ for prosecution.
Schiff said the committee "has engaged lawyers" to secure the testimony of the four Trump associates following subpoenas.
"But we have engaged with lawyers that are representing them to try to secure their testimony," he continued.
"But also to make it very clear that those who don't cooperate with our committee are going to be the subject of criminal contempt."
"We will vote on it in the House at the appropriate time, and we will refer to the Justice Department for prosecution."
"So we're not fooling around. We expect people to fulfill their lawful duties."
“If there are legitimate questions that are raised, we'll answer them, respond to them, but we want to make sure that we provide all this information to the American people."
