White Volunteers Fired from Art Museum and Replaced with ‘Diverse’ Paid Workers

An art museum in Chicago has fired hundreds of its volunteers for being too white and replaced them with more "diverse" paid workers.

The Art Institute of Chicago relied on 122 highly skilled volunteers, consisting of older white women, who acted as guides to the Museum’s collection of 300,000 works.

Volunteers greeted groups to help children understand the importance of art.

Volunteers underwent rigorous training and were doing a great job.

But they have now been all fired, simply because they were not "diverse" enough.

"Many of the volunteers—though not all—are older white women, who have the time and resources to devote so much free labor to the Museum,” reports the Why Evolution is True blog. 

"But the demographics of that group weren’t appealing to the AIC, and so, in late September, the AIC fired all of them, saying they’d be replaced by smaller number of hired volunteers workers who will be paid $25 an hour.

"That group will surely meet the envisioned diversity goals.”

The Docent Council complained about the decision in a letter to Art Institute President James Rondeau:

We believe we were dismissed (1) because the museum’s perspective is that the current docent corps’ demographics do not meet the need of the strategic plan (2) the museum concluded that reengineering the docent program was a step towards achieving the museum’s important goal of creating a culture of diversity and inclusion.

“Once you cut through the blather, the letter basically said the museum had looked critically at its corps of docents, a group dominated by mostly (but not entirely) white, retired women with some time to spare, and found them wanting as a demographic,” stated the Chicago Tribune.

This is the work of the museum’s new Woman’s Board Executive Director, Learning and Public Engagement, Victoria Stein. Stein, who is black, was hired earlier this year.

The lack of “diversity” is only apparently a problem at one end of the spectrum.

Last month, an English Touring Opera (ETO) offloaded half of its orchestral players in order to prioritize “increased diversity in the orchestra.”

The cleansing was in the interests of following “firm guidance of the Arts Council,” a government-funded body.
