Chinese Communist Party Mocks Biden: ‘Are You Awake or Asleep Again?’
Hu Xijin blasts Biden following WaPo Op-ed
Joe Biden's recent, somewhat weak, remarks about standing up to China evoked a biting response in Beijing.
Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of the Chinese Communist Party newspaper Global Times asked in a tweet:
“Are you awake or asleep again?”
Xijin also took a jab at Biden’s recent announcement that the U.S. will share 80 million doses of the COVID vaccine with the world.
Hu initially responded to a Washington Post op-ed, which outlines Biden's plans during his trip to Europe.
Biden will attend G7, NATO, and European Union summits and also meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Geneva.
Biden wrote in the article:
“Whether it is ending the COVID-19 pandemic everywhere, meeting the demands of an accelerating climate crisis, or confronting the harmful activities of the governments of China and Russia, the United States must lead the world from a position of strength."
Hu then asked, while picking up on that particular sentence:
“You want to lead the world with 80 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines and excessive U.S. dollar printing?”
“Are you awake or asleep again?” he continued.
“Talking about China every day, you are the most diffident U.S. president.”
Biden continued in the Op-ed that democracies would offer “a high-standard alternative to China for upgrading physical, digital and health infrastructure that is more resilient and supports global development.”
He added that interactions with E.U. leaders would “focus on ensuring that market democracies, not China or anyone else, write the 21st-century rules around trade and technology.”
In an article on Sunday, Global Time accused Biden of trying to turn the G7 “into a narrow-minded and outdated anti-China and anti-Russia club.”
But China gives praise to Biden where it is due.
Earlier this year, China applauded Biden for "showing respect" to Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leader Xi Jinping.
The state-controlled Chinese media hailed the "positive" call between Hunter Biden's father and CCP General Secretary Xi.
China's propaganda outlets described Biden as "respectful" to the Communist regime.
Two CCP-run newspapers, the Xinhua news agency and the Global Times, both highlighted the timing, on the eve of the Lunar New Year, as a gesture of goodwill from the new presidential administration.
Last year, Global Times gave a grim assessment of America's future and said the election was a sign of “rapid U.S. political decay and decline."
“The decline of U.S. politics in 2020 is destined to be recorded in history,” wrote China’s state-run Global Times.
The outlet cited gun and ammunition purchases as evidence that a civil war is brewing.
The decay is first manifested by the embarrassing situation: Effective governance in the US is relatively or absolutely insufficient. The government’s responsibility – to provide society with the necessary public goods to cope with the impact and challenge of a crisis – is absent.People are seeing strange and even contradictory signs. The US has the most developed medical technology and system that can “cure” a 74-year-old white elderly man (US President Donald Trump) infected with the novel coronavirus in just three days. Yet this same country – with about 4 percent of the world’s population – contributes to more than 20 percent of the world’s COVID-19 mortality.
