Texas Reports Zero COVID Deaths After Biden Slammed Abbott's 'Neanderthal Thinking'
The number is the first time no coronavirus deaths in about 14 months
Just two months after Democrat Joe Biden slammed Gov. Greg Abbott for ending business restrictions and lifting the state's mask mandate, Texas has now reported zero deaths from COVID-19.
According to state health data, the number is the first time no coronavirus deaths have been recorded in about 14 months.
Abbott said the number was the lowest in more than 13 months.
The number of hospitalizations was the lowest in 11 months.
Today Texas reported:— Greg Abbott (@GregAbbott_TX) May 17, 2021
* 0 Covid related deaths--the only time that's happened since data was tracked in March, 2020.
* the fewest Covid cases in over 13 months
* the lowest 7-day Covid positivity rate ever
* the lowest Covid hospitalizations in 11 months.
In March, Biden joined a growing number of Democrats blasting governors of Mississippi and Texas for lifting their statewide mask mandates.
“I think it’s a big mistake,” Biden said at the time.
“The last thing, the last thing we need is Neanderthal thinking that in the meantime, everything’s fine, take off your mask, forget it,” Biden said.
Abbott at the time announced businesses could reopen and operate at full capacity.
Biden said at the time:
"We are on the cusp of being able to fundamentally change the nature of this disease because of the way in which we're able to get vaccines in people's arms."
Abbott slammed Biden's comments, saying he himself was engaging in a “Neanderthal-type approach” by releasing COVID-positive illegal immigrants into Texas with his open border policies.
“First, obviously it is not the type of thing a president should be saying, but second, he said it on the worst day he could have because the same day he said that, in Texas, the Biden administration was releasing illegal immigrants into our communities who had COVID,” Abbott stated.
“The Biden administration was spreading COVID in South Texas yesterday because of their lack of constraint of testing and quarantining, people who had come across the border illegally."
"The Biden administration was exposing Texans to COVID — that is a Neanderthal-type approach to dealing with the COVID situation," he continued.
“But more importantly … with regard to masks, the change in Texas really wasn’t all that much different from what we were before for a couple of reasons."
But cases have dropped as more Americans are vaccinated.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its guidance last week, stating it was safe for fully vaccinated Americans to go indoors and outdoors without a mask.
Meanwhile, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warned his state would not back down on its ban on “vaccine passports,” despite pressure from the state’s $8.1 billion cruise industry.
DeSantis said the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention’s (CDC) conditional-sale order update, which requires 95% of cruise ship passengers and 98% of the crew be vaccinated, and ships undergo 60 to 90 days of preparation and test sailing before resuming full operations, is “an absolute farce.”
