Liberal Students Demand Ronald Reagan Airport Named after LGBT Icon JoJo Siwa
Almost 5,500 people signed the Change.org petition
Georgetown University students are demanding the Ronald Reagan airport in Washington, D.C., be renamed after LGBT icon and “Dance Moms” cast member JoJo Siwa.
Almost 5,500 people signed the Change.org petition calling for the Ronald Reagan Airport to be renamed “JoJo Siwa Washington National Airport.”
The petition was launched by Georgetown student Dylan Long.
Long wrote in the description of the petition:
“Why on earth is there an airport named after this war criminal[?]”
An extra 2,000 signatures is needed to reach its goal of 7,500 people.
Long said he wanted to pick an LGBT figure to replace the former president because of how he handled the AIDS epidemic.
“I really did not put too much thought into who it was, but my reasoning for picking JoJo Siwa was related to the fact that Reagan in his presidency did a lot of really terrible things with regard to the LGBTQ communities, specifically with the HIV and AIDS pandemic,” Long said.
“I decided to pick JoJo Siwa because she’s been this recent rise as a new LGBT figure.”
Reagan airport has no authority over its name, and Congress must approve any name change.
People blasted Reagan in the comment section of the petition and approved of the name change.
One commenter said they would rather have an airport named after Ted Bundy.
“Ronald Reagan was not good for America, and I’d be glad to have a positive role model’s name on this airport,” one comment read.
“I’d support renaming this airport after anyone who isn’t Ronald Reagan, and [who] was never the second-worst president in this country’s history,” another comment read.
“Even Ted Bundy National Airport sounds better.”
“Ronald Reagan was a war criminal who hated all minorities but especially gay people," the commenter wrote.
"I think it is only fitting that he is replaced by American icon JoJo Siwa."
Earlier this year, Siwa announced she identified as a member of the LGBTQ community.
The dancer made her announcement on TikTok when she came out lip-syncing to Lady Gaga’s song “Born This Way” and followed up by posting a photo of herself wearing a T-shirt that read:
“Best. Gay. Cousin. Ever.”
