Joe Biden has claimed dogs can help cure cancer, insisting it was "not a joke" during his visit to a cancer research center on Tuesday.

“By the way, dogs may help cure cancer,” Biden said.

“Not a joke."

"Dogs are able to … they’re using dogs now … to smell cancer in people’s legs, in people’s bodies, not a joke, it’s a fascinating thing.”

During a tour of the James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, Biden spoke to reporters on the subject.

Despite Biden's claims, it is not proven that dogs can help cure cancer.

But according to a study published in 2019, a dog's smell can accurately pick out blood samples from people with cancer.

Dogs have also been trained to work with some cancer research teams in order to detect cancer.

Biden was briefed about the fight to cure cancer by the chair of the radiology and oncology department at Ohio State University, Dr. Arnab Chakravarti.

Biden said he was encouraged by the technological progress on fighting the disease.

“It’s mostly hopeful because I don’t want to see anybody go through what my son did,” he said.

Biden spoke about his late son recalling the damage that radiation took on his son’s body during the treatment.

“The use of radiation is a very complex thing, my son underwent it, radiation is a complicated deal … radiation kills all of the bad things but also kills any good things it comes into contact with,” he said.

Biden's remarks come weeks after his two German Shepherds were removed from the White House after turning on security.

The dogs' "aggressive behavior" reportedly involved a "biting incident" with a member of White House security.

CNN reported that "the exact condition of the victim is unknown, however, the episode was serious enough that the dogs were subsequently moved to Wilmington, Delaware, where they remain."

One of the dogs, named Major, “has been known to display agitated behavior on multiple occasions, including jumping, barking, and ‘charging’ at staff and security.”
