House Democrats Pass Bill to Criminalize Private Gun Sales
Legislation passes by a vote of 227 to 203 in Dem-run Congress
Lawmakers in the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives have passed a radical bill that criminalizes private gun sales.
Members voted to pass the Democratic Party's long-sought universal background check gun control legislation on Thursday.
The legislation, H.R. 8, makes it a crime to conduct private gun sales without an FBI background check.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA), passed by a vote of 227 to 203.
H.R. 8 expands retail point-of-sale background checks to also cover private points-of-sale.
Under the legislation, an individual who sells a 5-shot revolver to a lifelong neighbor will be committing a criminal act unless that neighbor first undergoes a National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) check, conducted by the FBI.
On Wednesday, bill sponsor Thompson claimed, without evidence, his bill is supported by “90 percent of the American [people].”
H.R. 8 was also passed by the House in early 2019 but never taken up by the Republican-controlled Senate.
However, due to Democrat gains in the current Senate, the legislation will likely be discussed this time around.
In order to be enforceable, universal background checks will also require a gun registry.
The need for invasive information about gun owners' firearms has prompted a backlash from many law-abiding citizens.
As Neon Nettle previously reported, Republican Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) blasted the Democrats' ongoing push for gun control measures, declaring that “the government is never going to know what weapons I own.”
The Texas congressman made the declaration during a speech on the House floor on Wednesday.
Rep. Roy warned that bills such as H.R. 8, the Democrats’ universal background checks legislation, are still being debated.
Roy was making clear that he, and many other law-abiding Americans, are not going to be giving up information on their guns.
“The government is never going to know what weapons I own," TheFirstonTv quoted Roy saying.
"Let me be clear about that. It’s not gonna happen!”
