Pelosi: Americans ‘Overwhelmingly’ Support House Gun Control Bill
House Speaker touts Democrat-sponsored universal background check legislation
Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi claimed Americans “overwhelmingly” support the Democrat-sponsored universal background check legislation.
Pelosi spoke prior to the House voting on the legislation, H.R. 8, aired by CSPAN.
"There is nobody in Congress whose political survival is more important than the survival of our children."
"We think this should be bipartisan to Congress, as it is in the country."
"Overwhelmingly, there is broad support for background checks legislation, so we hope with the big strong bipartisan vote we have today to send it over the Senate, the drumbeat across America, that the change will come."
“This legislation…will save lives.”
Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) said during the same press conference:
“Background checks is supported by 90 percent of Americans.”
Last month, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said gun control was “a priority” for Joe Biden.
Psaki stressed gun control is “a priority to him on a personal level," referring to Biden.
Though she did not elaborate on Biden’s gun plans, she noted his support for smart gun technology:
“I will say that the president is somebody, throughout his career, who has advocated for smart gun, smart gun safety measures.”
Gun control activist group March for Our Lives has given Biden the list of policy demands they want to be implemented in his administration's first 100 days.
