GOP Lawmakers: Biden’s Border Policies Are a COVID ‘Super Spreader Event’
Republicans call out restart of the Catch and Release program
23 House Republicans are demanding the true numbers of border crossers that are testing positive for COVID-19 and being released into the United States.
In a letter, led by Republican Rep. Michael Burgess, they call out Joe Biden’s border policies where thousands of migrants are being released into the nation’s interior.
Those enrolled in the Remain in Mexico program are tested for the virus, while others are released regardless of their test results.
The letter states:
“There are reports that at least 100 migrants who tested positive for coronavirus have been released into the United States."
This month, Neon Nettle reported that illegal border crossers tested positive for COVID-19, despite Biden denying there was “a crisis” at the border.
Even after the positive result, crossers were freed into the U.S.
Republicans argued the restart of the Catch and Release program is “a guaranteed super spreader event.”
Historical precedent indicates illegal border crossings may increase to over 100,000 per month this spring. Due to the continued need for social distancing, [DHS] facilities will quickly reach capacity. Even with efforts to social distance, reporting states that migrants are already being held in crowded spaces while being processed. [Emphasis added]
Coupled with the lack of coronavirus testing along the southern border, this is a guaranteed super spreader event. At the very least, all individuals encountered along our southern border must be tested for coronavirus and provided with personal protective equipment. [Emphasis added]
Republicans are also demanding to know why the Center is not turning border crossers for Disease Control’s Title 42 order, which helped stem the flow of illegal immigration by permitting officials to quickly return border crossers back to their native countries.
The lawmakers are also asking how many border crossers are being released into the U.S. interior.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump blasted Biden's leadership over the growing crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Trump said the "totally out of control" border crisis is seeing illegal immigrants pour into the country.
“Our border is now totally out of control thanks to the disastrous leadership of Joe Biden," Trump said.
"Our great Border Patrol and ICE agents have been disrespected, demeaned, and mocked by the Biden Administration."
"A mass incursion into the country by people who should not be here is happening on an hourly basis, getting worse by the minute."
“Many have criminal records, and many others have and are spreading covid. Interior enforcement has been shut down—criminals that were once promptly removed by our Administration are now being released back onto the street to commit heinous and violent crimes."
Earlier this week, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott deployed State Troopers and the Texas National Guard to tackle the Border crisis.
Abbott announced his effort, dubbed "Operation Lone Star," to tackle the federal government's open border policies.
The operation seeks “to combat the smuggling of people and drugs into Texas,” Abbott said in a statement Saturday evening.
