Pelosi Announces 9/11-Type Commission to Investigate Capital Riot
House speaker pushes for new probe into January 6 attack
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is not letting the acquittal of Donald Trump put a stop to the Democrats launching new investigations into the January 6 attack.
Pelosi is now calling for a 9/11-style commission to investigate the attack on the Capitol that launched the impeachment against President Trump.
The speaker wrote in a letter about the significance of Presidents' Day, "celebrating America’s two greatest presidents: George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.”
The letter says the United States “was blessed with the great patriotism of these presidents.
"And now we are grateful for the great patriotism of our Impeachment Managers,” who she describes as doing an “excellent job defending our democracy and honoring our Constitution.”
Pelosi also details the work that Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honoré has been doing in order to look into security needs to prevent any future attacks on the Capitol building.
Pelosi assigned Lt. General Honoré to lead a review of the security of the U.S. Capitol after the January 6 attack.
Pelosi says that his findings have made it “clear” that “we must get to the truth of how this happened.”
She also emphasized the need for “a supplemental appropriation to provide for the safety of Members and the security of the Capitol.”
Her letter reads:
To protect our security, our security, our security, our next step will be to establish an outside, independent 9/11-type Commission to “investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021, domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex… and relating to the interference with the peaceful transfer of power, including facts and causes relating to the preparedness and response of the United States Capitol Police and other Federal, State, and local law enforcement in the National Capitol Region.”
Pelosi's statement was concluded by referring to the country’s founders, saying, “we must be worthy of the courage and wisdom of the patriarch of our country, George Washington, and of the savior of our country, Abraham Lincoln.”
But Pelosi's request for such a commission comes as top Republicans' question her 'security decisions' leading up to and during the Capitol attack on January 6.
As Neon Nettle reported on Monday:
In a letter to Pelosi, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jim Jordan, House Administration Committee Ranking Member Rodney Davis, House Oversight Committee Ranking Member James Comer, and House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Devin Nunes said there were "many important questions" about her "responsibility for the security" that "remain unanswered."
They pointed to former Capitol Police Chief Steve Sund's claims that he approached the sergeants at arms to request the assistance of the National Guard.
Sund said the former Sergeant at Arms Paul Irving said he was concerned about "the optics" and didn’t feel the "intelligence supported it."
Last week, Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-S.C., also placed suspicion on Pelosi by questioning what she knew prior to the Capitol riot in January.
"Here’s what I want to know: What did Nancy Pelosi know, and when did she know it?" Graham said.
Pelosi also sent a separate letter to Democrats earlier this month, writing that it is “clear that we will need to establish a 9/11-type Commission to examine and report upon the facts, causes, and security relating to the terrorist mob attack on January 6," CNN reported.
Pelosi reportedly said it would not look the same as the one created after September 11th, 2002.
Pelosi was approving of at the time of the 9/11 commission but added: “it’s a different world” now, noting there would be more diversity on this one.
