Democrat Governors Breach Own COVID Restrictions to Attend Biden Inauguration
Gov Whitmer tweeted a photo from the ceremony
Democratic governors, including Gretchen Whitmer, defied their own coronavirus restrictions and travel recommendations in order to attend the inauguration of Joe Biden earlier this week.
Whitmer tweeted a photo from the ceremony, laters saying she "left with the feeling of great hope and optimism and determination."
But Whitmer's attendance violated her recent "gatherings and face mask order."
The Governor's restrictions imposed on residents of her state require outdoor gatherings to be limited to 25 or fewer people.
Around 2,000 people attended Biden's inauguration, the Washington Post reported.
Michigan state senator Aric Nesbitt said that Whitmer's hypocrisy is "nothing new."
Last year, Whitmer attended a Detroit Black Lives Matter protest just days after expressing a "high level of concern" such gathering would spread the coronavirus.
Nesbitt told the Washington Free Beacon:
"Governor Whitmer has sadly been more focused on public relations and partisan politics instead of collaborating and making smart decisions to better help the people of Michigan."
Meanwhile, Joe Biden appeared maskless at the Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday, right after signing an executive order requiring masks to be worn on federal land.
Biden signed the federal mask mandate as one of several orders he pushed through before his first day was out.
“The most pressing of his priorities are measures to combat the deadly coronavirus pandemic,” The Washington Post reported.
“Biden signed executive actions to require masks on all federal grounds and asked agencies to extend moratoriums on evictions and on federal student loan payments.”
The order lasts 100 days and “applies on federal property and on airlines, trains and transit systems traveling between states,” The Wall Street Journal noted.
Despite his order, Biden was seen late on Wednesday night visiting the Lincoln Memorial and not wearing a mask.
