Democrat Gov. Whitmer: Trump 'Incites' Attacks with Calls Like 'Liberate Michigan'
Governor compares Capitol riot to the group of anti-lockdown protesters
Democrat Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer compared the recent U.S. Capitol riot to the group of anti-lockdown protesters that breached her state Capitol last year.
Whitmer accused Trump of inciting such groups to attack, and he “legitimizes” with tweets like “Liberate Michigan."
During MSNBC’s Sunday broadcast MSNBC’s “American Voices,” Whitmer said:
“That last event [in Michigan] … also had people with long guns and automatic rifles standing up legislators and intimidating them,” Whitmer said.
“That’s much the same tactic that we saw play out in the nation’s capital."
"Many people that were a part of that last event that he described were actually indicted in the plot to kidnap and murder me," she added.
"And so, it is not just a demonstration."
"What we have seen is a scary, very concerning elevation of actions taken to intimidate or to hurt people who are simply trying to do their jobs and keep people safe, and whether it is directed at me or Dr. Fauci or Secretary Benson or the Secretary of State in Georgia is wrong."
“When the president tweets something like ‘Liberate Michigan’ … it incites people. it legitimizes actions to hurt us and that is not acceptable,” Michigan Gov. "And I’m grateful that people are coming to this conclusion after it being directed at the United States Congress, but this has been going on for 10 months, and we’ve been asking people to take this seriously.”
Last year, Whitmer was accused of encouraging assassination attempts on President Donald Trump after displaying “8645” in the background of a national television interview.
The Democratic governor spoke from Lansing, Mich., about her state’s COVID-19 restrictions and attacked Trump's response to the pandemic.
In the back, the digits “8645” in bubble letters could be seen by a house plant on a coffee table behind her.
In November, Republican members of the Michigan House of Representatives proposed impeachment articles against Whitmer after she issued fresh lockdown orders for her state.
