Biden's 'Humane' Immigration Plan Gives Green Cards to Illegal Aliens, Harris Reveals
Includes path to citizenship for millions living in the United States illegally
Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) has revealed that former Vice President Joe Biden's immigration plan gives green cards to millions of illegal aliens living in America.
Harris said Tuesday said the Biden administration will take a more "humane" approach to illegal immigration.
Biden plans to introduce an immigration reform bill that would grant automatic green cards to immigrants and provide a pathway to citizenship for millions of people who have entered the country illegally.
Sen. Harris told Univision that green cards will be given to those with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) as well as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients – who were brought to the U.S. as children when their parents crossed the border illegally.
The plan "creates a path for the majority of the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the country to" get citizenship, Harris said.
It will "first making them legal permanent residents, a status they could access within a period of eight years," she explained.
Harris also told the network the administration would work to streamline the path to citizenship, according to Politico.
It currently takes around 13 years to become a citizen, but Harris says Biden wants to reduce it to just eight.
"It's a smarter and much more humane way of approaching immigration," she said.
Harris also vowed to "expand protections" for DACA recipients.
She said the administration "will make sure that people receive [coronavirus] vaccines regardless of their immigration status."
The plan also proposes to add more immigration judges to alleviate the backlog at the border, Politico reported.
She told Univision that Biden’s administration would also end some of Trump's immigration policy.
Biden is vowing to end the practice of "dividing and separating families at the border" - when foreign nationals seeking asylum arrive at the border with children and claim to be their parents.
A group of immigration activists plans to meet with faith leaders in Delaware Wednesday.
They are demanding a meeting with Biden to make sure he makes "good on his campaign promises, and to act immediately when he takes office next week to protect families," according to Politico.
