CNN's Acosta: Trump Supporters' 'Hostility' Makes Members of Media 'Feel Endangered'
WH correspondent laments on relationship between the press and president
CNN's White House correspondent Jim Acosta has claimed President Donald Trump’s treatment of the media has emboldened his supporters, making members of the press "feel endangered."
During CNN’s “Reliable Sources" on Sunday, Acosta said Trump supporters have absorbed the president's “hostility” toward the media.
The CNN anchor said that, as a result, members of the media “feel endangered” with “death threats.”
“There were Trump supporters all over the country absorbing this hostility that the president was directing at the press and then lashing out at us, as well, and in ways that made us feel endangered,” Acosta lamented.
“You know, I am not the only reporter who covered this White House who has had death threats."
"There have been a number of us who have experienced death threats," Acosta said.
"We can’t be at a place in this country, Brian, where political reporters, White House correspondents, and so on need bodyguards to go cover political campaigns and so on," he added.
"And so, it’s more than just pulling a press pass or yelling at a reporter at a press conference or calling somebody names like we heard President Trump do … from time to time.”
“It is just a pervasive hostility towards the president — anti-democratic hostility towards the press that I just hope we never see the likes of ever again," Acosta continued.
"It is just so damaging and destructive for our democracy.”
Earlier this year, Acosta accused Trump of “chasing” after a fever dream for trying to overturn the election results.
"We had multiple days in a row where the president is not getting out in front of the camera and addressing reporters."
"He would have had multiple opportunities if he wants them to not only speak out on the pandemic and encourage people to get out there and get vaccinations but also to warn Vladimir Putin to stay out of this federal government."
"He’s just chosen not to do so.”
