Gates remarks come as hundreds of thousands of business face devastation due to the pandemic

Bill Gates, who is worth $120 Billion, has advocated for keeping small businesses, like bars and restaurants, closed for months due to the rise in coronavirus cases.

During an interview with CNN on Sunday, Gates told host Jake Tapper that he believes it is “appropriate” for bars and restaurants “in most of the country” to be shuttered.

Over 110,000 restaurants have been forced to permanently shut their doors as the country is pummelled by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The industry is pleading for aid via the Restaurants Act, which would establish a $120 billion fund to save restaurants, Bloomberg reported.

Gates told Tapper:

“Well, certainly, mask-wearing has essentially no downside."

"They’re not expensive," Gates continued.

“Bars and restaurants in most of the country will be closed as we go into this wave."

"And I think, sadly, that’s appropriate.

"Depending on how severe it is, the decision about schools is much more complicated, because, there, the benefits are pretty high, the amount of transmission is not the same as in restaurants and bars.”

He continued:

“So, trade-offs will have to be made."

"But this — the next four to six months really call on us to do our best because we can see that this will end, and you don’t want somebody you love to be the last to die of coronavirus.”

When Gates was asked if life would be returning to normal, he said, “Certainly by the summer, [we’ll] be way closer to normal than we are now.

“But even through early 2022, unless we help other countries get rid of this disease, and we get high vaccination rates in our country, the risk of reintroduction will be there and, of course, the global economy will be slowed down, which hurts America economically in a pretty dramatic way,” he continued.

“So, we’ll have, starting in the summer, about nine months where a few things, like big public gatherings, will still be restricted."

"But we can see now that, somewhere between 12 to 18 months, we have a chance, if we manage it well, to get back to normal.”

Earlier this year, Gates called for taxpayer money from Western nations to be used to fund COVID-19 vaccines in countries around the world.

The Microsoft founder argued that nations in the West must dedicate more government funding for vaccines and distribution networks around the globe.

According to Gates, paying for billions of doses of vaccines for poorer countries is the only way we can eradicate COVID-19 in the West and return to our normal lives.

Gates, the second richest man in the world, says third-world countries don’t have the financial clout to strike deals, such as the $2 billion agreement that Washington struck with Pfizer, so the responsibility falls into the lap of the Western taxpaying public.
