Calls for Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler to Resign After Fatal Shooting
Groups called for Wheeler’s resignation in a joint letter
Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler and Police Chief Chuck Lovell are facing calls to resign after violent clashes between Black Lives Matter and supporters of President Donald Trump, resulting in a deadly shooting in the city.
Progressive groups called for Wheeler’s resignation in a joint letter arguing the Mayor had “not protected or supported” the city’s residents.
“What took place last night was inevitable given Mayor Wheeler’s repeated failure,” the letter said, the Oregonian reported.
“He has not protected or supported Portlanders. We do not have confidence in his ability to course-correct. He must resign.”
The executive director of the Oregon Justice Resource Center, Bobbin Singh, called for local leaders to resign.
“These conditions have been created because there’s been a lack of leadership, a lack of vision,” Singh said.
“We can no longer move forward with the current leadership that’s in place in Portland.”
The victim of Saturday’s shooting was identified as Aaron “Jay” Danielson of Portland, who was was gunned down by Antifa terrorists.
Portland Police Bureau is investigating 48-year-old Michael Forest Reinoehl for his alleged involvement in the fatal shooting.
Meanwhile, Wheeler penned a letter to President Donald Trump, rejecting his offer to help tackle the riots in his city.
Democrat Wheeler published the letter rejecting President Trump’s offer on Twitter:
But Wheeler has faced a backlash from both sides of the political divide for allowing his city to be destroyed by far-left rioters.
Trump called Wheeler a “fool” and blamed him for allowing violence to take over Portland.
Ted Wheeler, the wacky Radical Left Do Nothing Democrat Mayor of Portland, who has watched great death and destruction of his City during his tenure, thinks this lawless situation should go on forever. Wrong! Portland will never recover with a fool for a Mayor....— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 30, 2020
Wheeler responded to Trump's remarks during a news conference:
“That’s classic Trump. Mr. President, how can you think that a comment like that, if you’re watching this, is in any way helpful?" Wheeler said.
"It’s an aggressive stance; it is not collaborative. I certainly reached out, I believe in a collaborative manner, by saying earlier that you need to do your part and I need to do my part, and then we both need to be held accountable.”
.@tedwheeler Portland is your responsibility, not President @realDonaldTrump’s! You have allowed #BLM and #Antifa militants to control your city for more than 100 days! You’ve done nothing about it! You’ve refused help from the federal government! That killing is your fault! https://t.co/ddYLNcwdbb— Bernard B. Kerik (@BernardKerik) August 30, 2020
Last week, far-left activists also stormed the building where Wheeler lives just a day after he refused the President's help.
