A 12-year-old girl was killed after being shot while walking her dog over the weekend in Stockholm, Sweden.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday in the municipality of Botkyrka outside a local McDonald’s restaurant.

The young girl is believed to have been caught up in a gang shoot out, but local police have been resistant to share details, according to broadcaster SVT.

Acting deputy regional police chief, Palle Nilsson, said:

“Generally speaking, these types of shootings have links to criminal networks, but we do not go into what it is like in this particular case."

Nilsson added that around 30 people in Stockholm are behind crimes linked to criminal networks.

Criminologist Mikael Rying, said at least five innocent bystanders had been killed because of gang violence in the last five years.

“These people are behind a large part of extortion, robbery, drug sales, shootings, explosions, and murders in the region,” Nilsson said.

Meanwhile, criminologist Mikael Rying, said at least five innocent bystanders had been killed because of gang violence in the last five years.

“In the early 1990s, there were a lot of drug deals where someone was shot in a garage or an apartment," he said.

"Then came the biker gangs in the second half of the ’90s with rules for both entry and exit," he added.

"There was order within these groupings. Since the second half of the ’00s, it began to become more Wild West,” Rying admitted.

Shootings in Sweden have become a significant issue with a 100 percent increase in deaths from shootings between 2012 and 2019

Rying said, unlike in the past, gangs follow fewer rules, and are more likely to kill innocent people.

According to reports from the Swedish National Forensic Centre released last year, shootings have become a significant issue with a 100 percent increase in deaths from shootings between 2012 and 2019.

Last year, the former CEO of one of the largest Swedish companies warned that Sweden is heading for "civil war."

Leif Östling, who served as Chief Executive Officer of Scania, a major global trucking company in Sweden, has warned that unchecked mass immigration from alien cultures will eventually lead to his country's demise.
