Trump: Anyone Who Burns the American Flag Should Go to Jail for a Year
President warns rioters of possible legislation
President Donald Trump said during his rally in Oklahoma yesterday that anyone who burns the American flag should go to prison for a year.
The president suggested Congress takes up legislation to make burning the American flag a criminal act, punishable by a being sent to jail for a year.
“Two days ago, leftist radicals in Portland, Oregon, ripped down a statue of George Washington and wrapped it in an American flag and set the American flag on fire,” Trump said.
“And you know, we ought to do something, Mr. Senators… we ought to come up with legislation that if you burn the American flag, you go to jail for one year,” Trump added.
“We should have legislation that if somebody wants to burn the American flag and stomp on it, but just burn it, they go to jail for one year,” he continued.

"We ought to come up with legislation that if you burn the American flag you go to jail for one year. One year...I'm a big believer in freedom of speech, but that's desecration."
Trump supported legislation by Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) last year, prohibiting flag burning by passing a constitutional amendment.
The president's remarks come just days after rioters toppled a statue of George Washington in Portland before draping it in a burning American flag.
The group of rioters converged on NE Sandy Boulevard and NE 57th Avenue at around ten p.m.
KOIN News reported that some of the rioters wrapped the statue’s head in an American flag before setting it on fire.
Antifa rioters on Sandy Blvd. in Portland draped a US flag over a George Washington statue & set it on fire. They then toppled the statue. “Genocidal colonist” & “f— cops” are sprayed on monument. Last week, Black Lives Matter rioters also toppled the historic Christopher Columbus statue in Minneapolis.
The Columbus statue was sculpted by an Italian immigrant and was presented as a gift from Minnesota’s Italian-Americans.
