House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) quoted Isaiah 2:12 and Isaiah 10:1-2 in a letter to her Democratic colleagues, which seemed to take a swipe at the Trump administration and police corruption.

“As Isaiah says, ‘For the Lord will have a day of reckoning… Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed,’” Pelosi said.

“A reckoning is here for justice in policing, and I commend Chair Karen Bass and the Congressional Black Caucus on their important leadership in presenting the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020,” she added.

“As we prayerfully protect the American people, we are protecting our Constitution,” she continued.

Pelosi then focused on the Trump administration's handling of the coronavirus.

“A reckoning is also in order for the lives lost and the disparate impact of the virus on the communities of color,” Pelosi said.

“On March 15, there were 60 known deaths in the United States. Today, June 15, there are over 116,000 deaths,” she stated.

“This sad record represents a horrible failure of the Trump Administration in terms of PPE, testing, and behavior recommended by scientists,” she said.

“We pray for a vaccine and a cure but are months away from such relief from COVID-19,” Pelosi said.

“We do have testing, tracing, treatment, and isolation to curb the spread of the virus and have a moral responsibility to engage in such practices.”

This is not the first time the House Speaker has quoted a passage from the Bible.

Last year, Pelosi recited a verse from the Bible at the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.

But the verse she shared didn't even exist, according to leading theology professors.

“And I can’t find it in the Bible, but I quote it all the time, and I keep reading and reading the Bible,” Pelosi said.

“I know it’s there, someplace. It’s supposed to be in Isaiah. But I heard a bishop say, ‘To minister to the needs of God’s creation is an act of worship. To ignore those needs is to dishonor the God who made us.’"It’s there somewhere in some words or another, but certainly, the spirit of it is there.”

But Whitworth University associate professor of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament Will Kynes insisted that the verse didn't exist.

Here is the full text of Pelosi’s letter to her Democratic colleagues:

Dear Democratic Colleague,

As Isaiah says, “For the Lord will have a day of reckoning… Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed.”

A reckoning is here for justice in policing, and I commend Chair Karen Bass and the Congressional Black Caucus on their important leadership in presenting the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020. As we prayerfully protect the American people, we are protecting our Constitution.

A reckoning is also in order for the lives lost and the disparate impact of the virus on the communities of color. On March 15, there were 60 known deaths in the United States. Today, June 15, there are over 116,000 deaths. This sad record represents a horrible failure of the Trump Administration in terms of PPE, testing, and behavior recommended by scientists.

We pray for a vaccine and a cure but are months away from such relief from COVID-19. We do have testing, tracing, treatment and isolation to curb the spread of the virus and have a moral responsibility to engage in such practices.

We must insist on the passage of The Heroes Act to honor our heroes, open our economy with testing and put money in the pockets of America’s working families. Senator McConnell has said we need a pause. The virus doesn’t pause, unemployment doesn’t pause, hunger doesn’t pause – and neither should we.

The Republican Senators are turning their backs on the American people. Senator McConnell says he is the Grim Reaper and indeed he is. Every day the GOP Senate delays, more lives and livelihoods are lost.

Thank you for your leadership.

Best regards,
